The Broadsword

The Broadsword is a ‘broad’ term.  The Broadsword is simply a very large sword that required the warrior to wield the weapon with two hands.  These tended to be big, meaty swords that were impressive just to look at.  The broadsword is to swords as the ‘shot gun’ is to guns.  Ratchet a shotgun and everyone knows and quite honestly fears the sound.  It is the same for the broad sword.   People may not know what the exact name of the sword is or where it came from, they just know, it is a weapon of awesome power and to be respected.  Usually used in a cutting motion or sometimes thrusting, the broadsword came to be known as a symbol of power.

The Broadsword was developed in the medieval ages when techniques were developed to reinforce the tensile strength of the blade.  Early in history the blades could not extend beyond a certain length without compromising the strength of the blade.  However, the development of metal alloys whereby certain other elements were introduced to the iron during the smelting process, created alternative metals that coupled the strength of the added alloy material, to the malleability of the iron.  The Japanese were famous for this; most noted for the Katana style swords they created.

The Claymore is probably the most recognizable blade due to its’ popularity in movies.   However, any sword that requires or can be used with two hands can be termed a broadsword; Claymore, Katana, Swiss Longsword, all fall into this category.

Display the relics of the past proudly in your home.  These symbols of our warrior past, are ideal in just about any setting.  They could stand out as a decorative centerpiece in a room with a more rustic feel, as well as one with all of the regal and ornate decorations that bedeck a modern home.  In any room, the Broadsword is truly a weapon that brings a sense of connection between the present and the past.
