Japanese Samurai Sword
The Tachi sword was a sword used by the Japanese and is akin to the Katana
sword but is slightly longer and retains more curvature than it’s more famous
cousin. The Tachi was generally longer than the Katana, but as time wore
on, the Tachi and Katana were distinguished only by the method in which the
blade was worn. The Katana is worn with the cutting edge up with the blade
through the girdle, while the Tachi is worn with the cutting edge down and hung
from the ‘obi’ or belt. A further distinction between the Tachi
sword and the Katana sword lies in the fact that for the most part the Tachi
sword was used by the cavalry. This large sword was very effective in cutting
down foot soldiers, but because of the length became unwieldy on the ground.
Later the Tachi swords were cut down to make Katanas, so finding one of these
original swords is rare.
The Tachi sword like it’s relatives the Katana, Tanto and Wakizashi, is a
big beautiful sword. The Tachi is simply the preeminent sword if you are
looking to round out a sword collection. The large curvature, the razor
sharp edge, and the famous hilt, coupled with the sheer size of the Tachi, will
most definitely be a proud addition to any home décor. The Tachi sword
however is large, so give this weapon ample space so it does not over power
smaller rooms. But you should absolutely give this ancient weapon a place
of it’s own, so the stares you will get of such a magnificent weapon will be
well worth the lively conversation that will undoubtedly ensue.
